Respect The Dream and Learn Initiative - Statewide
This past year at William Penn High School we hosted several initiatives, for our students and for the staff, on the topic of respect. The response was overwhelming. We received more than 300 essays, poems, and submissions of artwork from the students, including those at-risk and/or with disabilities, expressing their views on respect. Two books: R.E.S.P.E.C.T find out what it means to me and R.E.S.P.E.C.T. the Dream and Learn were compiled from their submissions and distributed to staff, parents, and students. The students also held roundtable discussions on respect during state testing week, and they created school-wide respect exhibits which were displayed in the cafeterias. The teachers at William Penn reported that the school-wide respect contest brought a positive and noticeable change in the way students approached learning and in terms of the climate of the school.
To expand the "Respect the Dream and Learn" initiative to all students in Delaware, the Manners First Education Foundation will invite students in all school districts to participate in respect program contests and in other education initiatives.
